Kwun Mun Channel originally separated the High Island from the Sai Kung Peninsula. But from 1971 to 1978, High Island Reservoir was built to supply fresh water to Hong Kong people. Its West Dam and East Dam connects High Island with the Sai Kung Peninsula, but it is still known for the 4th largest island in Hong Kong. According to the study of Civil Engineering and Development Department of Hong Kong Government, millions of years ago, there was a super volcano lying between High Island and Ninepin Group (Kwo Chau Islands) over a span of 18km. Located at the very southeast of Hong Kong, this area has been polished by the most relentless wind and big waves and formed unique landforms.
